THE BIOGRAPHY OF Dr. EMMANUEL AKABE

Dr Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe was born on 29th November 1960 in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

His Educational Background

He attended St.Mikel Primary School, Akwanga,  Nasarawa state.

Upon completion, he proceeded to St.Joseph's College, Vom, Plateau State. He graduated as a Medical Doctor from the  University of Jos in 1984 where he became a value added personality in health matters.

In related development, he completed his Housemanship at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, (JUTH) in 1985, and his National youth service corp assignment (NYSC) at the Military Hospital, Division 82 in Enugu State, in 1986, respectively.

The profiled personality was admitted into Residency Training Programme to become a consultant in 1986 at Jos University Teaching Hospital, (JUTH). He completed the training in 1992 where he was admitted into the 'Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical of Nigeria'.

He had an in depth training on Cataract's surgery and medical retina in India.

As a Lecturer/Instructor

He lectured in the Uiversity of Jos, Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, in January 1993-1995 and from 1997-1999 he shifted to the department of Ophthalmology as a multi talented brain box.

He succeeded in his endeavor where he trained a number of outstanding Ophthalmologists from the Jos University Teaching Hospital, (JUTH) to National Hospital, Abuja. Some of them who are professors today.

As An Administrator

Dr. Emmanuel Akabe successfully coordinated different sections in the Medical Department.

Among these are;
* A coordinator, department of Ophthalmology, University of Jos;

*Head of  Ophthalmology department, University of Jos,(JUTH);

*Member of the Senate, University of Jos;

*Sole administrator, Plateau's Hospital, Jos, 1995-1997;

*A pioneer head of Ophthalmology, National Hospital Abuja;

* A one time member of the Board of National Eye Centre Kaduna, and lately appointed as Chairman of the Board;


*A former Honourable Commissioner of Health, Nasarawa state;

*Presently, Chairman of the Board of National Institute of Freshwater Fishery Research (NIFFR). A compartment under Federal Ministry of Agriculture;

* Member of the overseas Medical Board of Central Bank;

*Chairman of the Board of St Mary's Hospital, Gwagwalada; and

*He held many positions more often, either as chairman/member of adhoc or standing committees in the University of Jos, JUTH, National Hospital Abuja and as commissioner of Health.


Subsequently, on 23 August, 2013, Akabe  facilitated the approval and construction of three(3) General Hospitals worth 2.5blns in Nasarawa State.  He said the decision to erect more General Hospitals in the state was geared towards decongesting the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH), Lafia, Nasarawa state.

Social Responsibility:

The personality in topic was socially responsible, being a member and/or leader of the medical teams emerged as social cooperate body that raised medical aid to citizens, freely more often and particularly in restoration of sights to people who suffered sight effects and to the blinds in Adamawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Nasarawa states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Professional Responsibility:

He was professionally responsible in divergent areas, ranging from Association of Resident Doctors  (ARD), JUTH and National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) and he eventually exalted to the rank of 2nd National Vice President.

In Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), he has held numerous positions in Plateau state branch culminating in his election as Secretary and Chairman for two terms and National Assistant Secretary General for the period of five years.

He was also a National Treasurer under the leadership of Dr. Kitchener.

Accolades:

On 17 April, 2012, The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Nasarawa state honoured him as the then commissioner for Health for his contribution towards developmental projects to health's sector in the state.

In 2013 he also bagged a prestigious award from the University of Jos, respectively.

His Missions to the State:

* Outlays resources and energy in making positive contributions to substantiate the success of his Excellency (the governor of the state).

* No matter the hefty responsibilities that are assigned to him, shall be executed to it's logical ends.

His Philosophy

"As labour creates wealth, unity facilitates labour"

Conclusion:

Dr. Emmanuel Akabe is  an Ophthalmologist with special skills in the treatment of Glaucoma, A grassroot politician and a former Sole Administrator of Plateau hospital who served in the administration of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura as his commissioner of health and main vein in ensuring the health of citizens during the epidemic of Ebola and Lassa fevers, and he was an advocacy to the construction of new hospitals, revitalizing the Nasarawa state healthcare systems and closure of over 126 health centers that operated illegally, across the state. He also ensured  that both public and private sector health care systems were  strengthened with modern health facilities.

Undoubtedly, Dr Akabe fits absolutely the post of deputy governor owing to his extensive training, huge political background and uncommon achievements.

The joint hands of Engr. A.A Sule (a mechanical contraption and industrial engineer) and Dr. Emmanuel Akabe would nevertheless entrench development professionally in Nasarawa state, which will yield beneficial pace of development already kicked on by his Excellency Umaru Tanko Al-makura-- The Modern Architect.

He is married with three (3) children.
