Manchester United poised after Ronaldo requests shock move from Real

Image
Manchester United are treating with caution claims that Cristiano Ronaldo has set his heart on returning to the club after sources close to him let it be known he wants to leave Real Madrid. Although United would want to be involved in any discussion over Ronaldo's future, if he does eventually try to force his way out, they are pressing ahead with the transfer plans they already have in place for now. That includes a bid for Real striker Alvaro Morata and continued negotiations over Ivan Perisic, the Inter Milan attacking midfielder. Both Real and Inter, however, are attempting to hold out for higher fees than those offered but United do not want to overpay for either player. Even so, they would like to conclude the bulk of their transfer business before they embark on their pre-season tour of the United States, which begins against LA Galaxy on July 15. United have already bought Swedish defender Victor Lindelof for £30.7 million ($51.5 million). With Ronaldo they remain c...

Real Madrid’s Modric probed over false testimony

Image
The prosecutors alleged that, when questioned last week, Modric falsely said he had signed an annex to a contract with Dinamo over conditions for future transfers in July 2004 Croatian prosecutors said Monday they were opening an investigation into whether Real Madrid’s Luka Modric gave false testimony at the trial of Dinamo Zagreb’s powerful former boss, Zdravko Mamic. The 31-year-old midfielder is suspected of “committing the criminal offence of giving false testimony” on June 13 at the tribunal in eastern Croatia, according to the prosecutors’ statement. The statement did not name Modric directly but referred to “a Croatian citizen born in 1985”. Mamic is accused — along with his brother Zoran Mamic and two others — of abuse of power and graft that cost the former Croatian champions more than 15 million euros ($17.6 million), and the state 1.5 million euros. Cash was allegedly embezzled through fictitious deals related to player transfers, and Modric was called last ...

Germany edge Australia at Confederations Cup

Image
World champions Germany saw off the challenge of Australia in their opening match of the Confederations Cup at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi, prevailing 3-2. Germany, who have rested several star names for the tournament, took an early lead against the Asia Cup holders in Russia. A cut-back found Lars Stindl, one of the new faces in the Germany squad, and the striker produced a composed finish when free on the edge of the area. Having conceded after just five minutes, Australia regrouped and nearly levelled but Trent Sainsbury could only head wide from a free-kick. Australia would claw level when Tom Rogic’s shot from the edge of the box made its way through Germany’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the 41st minute. Germany would go back in front on the stroke of half-time as Julian Draxler scored comfortably from the penalty spot, after Leon Goretzka was brought down in the area. Goretzka would give Germany a cushion three minutes into the second half, with the midfielder firing ...

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford unfazed by £30m transfer

Image
Jordan Pickford  has insisted that he is not bothered by the large sum of money handed over by  Everton  to sign him from  Sunderland . The 23-year-old  completed his move  between the two clubs earlier this week, setting the Toffees back around £30m with add-ons - a record fee for a British keeper. Pickford is glad to have got the transfer out the way with prior to  England Under-21s  European Championship campaign in Poland, which he kicked off in style by saving a penalty in  Friday's goalless draw  with holders Sweden. "It's just a number isn't it?" he told reporters when asked about the £30m sum. "I got the deal out of the way and over the line so I could focus on the Euros. "I didn't know too much about it until I came out here but got that done so I could focus on trying to win the Euros. When I heard about it and they said they were sorting the medical so it could go through, it's nice to get it out of the way." ...

WWE Money in the Bank 2017 Ladder Matches' Best and Worst Possible Outcomes

Image
Credit: WWE.com One of the most important matches of the year in WWE is the Money in the Bank ladder match where the winner receives an almost guaranteed free pass into a championship reign within the next 12 months. This year, for the first time ever, the pay-per-view will be limited to the SmackDown brand, which is a definite shame considering how many people on Raw would benefit from having a shot at the gimmick. However, to compensate for that, there will be another first-time ever occurrence as a second briefcase and ladder match will be on the card where the women's division will be represented. Like any Money in the Bank scenario, there are multiple options of the winners for each match along with a nearly incalculable number of possible ways the eventual cash-ins will pan out over the course of the next year. Still, despite not knowing exactly what WWE has planned for the future, a few ideas just stand out as being potentially amazing or awful. With that bein...

US Open contender Justin Thomas holes crazy putt despite aiming AWAY from the green during record round

Image
Justin Thomas made history on Saturday as he set a new record-low round for a US Open course with a nine-under par 63 at Erin Hills. En route to registering nine birdies, one eagle and two bogeys, the American hit some truly remarkable shots, and the most remarkable of all appears to have been his birdie putt on the fifth hole. Lying just off the green in the fringes, Thomas took his time reading what looked to be an impossible putt. Indeed, many a pro golfer would have been happy to escape his position with a two-putt. +5 Justin Thomas, wearing bright pink trousers, confuses crowds by aiming away from the hole +5 The ball bounces around the edge before rolling onto the green and taking off down the slope But if you want to break records, you have to commit and that is exactly what Thomas did as he took on the incredibly risky manoeuvre, hitting the ball AWAY from the green and taking advantage of the steep slope. Had it been caught up ...

Marco Asensio is well on his way to becoming Spain and Real Madrid’s crowning jewel.

Image
The youngster continues to outgrow every professional playground he is placed in. At just 21 years of age, the future is bright for Spain's next big thing. First, it was one. Then two. A third curled around the back of the net, cushioned by its tautness. All three finishes punched emphatically into the back of Igor Aleksovski’s net on a cold summer evening in Gdynia.  The Macedonian goalkeeper could have done better with Saúl Ñíguez’s opener, but  Marco Asensio  gave his opponent precisely no chance as La Rojita kicked off their Under-21 European Championship campaign. The young forward arrived in Poland with the world at his feet, and leaves  Spain’s  first group game feeling on top of it.  Marco Asensio’s hat trick only confirmed what was already known, or at least presumed. He is ready, in no uncertain terms, to be a key part of  Zinedine Zidane’s  Real Madrid short-term plans. Their second string was a key competent of a double-w...
